Hunterdon Healthcare System developed a Diabetes Disaster Preparedness Guide for diabetes patients who must manage their condition during an emergency. The guide is intended to be used by patients during a variety of disasters, yet some of the information (e.g., foot care and blood sugar during strenuous physical labor) is applicable only to a structural or environmental disaster. The guide was later used by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

Supply lists and tip sheets provide helpful dietary, medical, and self-care information. Informative lists include: facts about insulin, pens, and syringes; the effect of stress, mealtimes, and physical activity on blood sugar; appropriate food items to stockpile; specific dietary and hydration considerations, including which foods and ingredients to avoid; and "sick day rules" for skipping meals, insulin use, hydration, blood sugar monitoring, ketone monitoring, and when to seek emergency care.

This document should be used as a guide by persons with diabetes. Specific treatment during an emergency should be discussed with one’s physician in as part of personal preparedness planning.
